Always repair barriers. It may seem like wasting time in higher levels, but if you repair the barriers then that means less zombies that are swarming you at a time, plus they give you ten extra points for every one you repair.
Avoid the starting weapons The starting weapons on the wall aren't all that great. You typically have 2 choices, the M14, a semi-automatic rifle with low damage, and the Olympia, a double-barreled shotgun with moderately low damage. One other starting weapon is the Ballista, featured in Origins. This is a bolt-action sniper rifle with moderate damage and iron sights. None of these guns will last you more than the first 5 rounds, 6 or 7 if you're good.
Use the mystery box. Let's face it, you aren't going to get by by buying the guns on the walls and using your pistol, you are going to have to at least once use the mystery box. To spot the mystery box, it will have a blue light straight into the air.

Aim for their heads. Headshots are the most efficient way to kill zombies. If you go for gut shots, you are going to waste a lot more ammo then you would if you tried to shoot them in the head.
Don't knife. Unless you are just starting out, knifing is too unreliable and most of the time that is how you are going to die, however if you are low on ammo or points you can get a zombie down to low health and knife for more points.
Try playing with other people. Fighting off hordes is a lot easier when you are doing it with four people. Not to mention they can revive you if you go down.
Find bottlenecks. These are especially useful in the higher levels or if you have a Light or Sub Machine Gun. You can easily kill off dozens of them in a tight space if you are getting low on health.
Use the machines. There are machines like tombstone and Pack a Punch everywhere, these give you perks and boosts which are vital in the later levels, however they do cost money and prevent you from shooting while drinking it so use them strategically.

Get better weapons (like the galvaknuckles), by racking up points before opening doors. Never open doors unless you're prepared for the zombie horde coming in there in later waves.
The DSR-50 holds 5 bullets and is the strongest gun on zombies so if you're good at quickscoping and get this out of the mystery box you should keep it. Here is a list of the upgrades you get when you pack-a-punch it multiple times

• The first time you pack a punch it it will hold 8 bullets instead of 5 and will have variable zoom
• The second time you pack a punch it it will still have 8 bullets, but this time it will have this very cool iorn sight
• The third time you pack a punch it it will still have 8 bullets but it will have a regular scope and a suppressor. After you pack a punch it once and you walk up to the pack-a punch machine it will say that to pack a punch it again it will cost 5000 points but it wont it will only cost 2000 points
